Wood Pergolas with Natural Warmth and Craftsmanship

Few materials feel as inviting as wood. A wood pergola brings warmth, texture and a sense of craft to the backyard, and it can be detailed to suit everything from a 1920s Craftsman to a clean-lined modern home.

Overview

Classic material, tailored details.

Wood gives us the most freedom in detailing: shaped rafter tails, chunky beams, slender modern slats, exposed joinery or a refined painted finish. That flexibility is why wood pergolas fit so naturally with the historic and character homes found throughout Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and Toluca Lake.

The trade-off is maintenance. Wood outdoors in Southern California sun needs to be sealed, stained or painted, and refreshed periodically, to stay looking its best. Choosing the right species and finish up front makes a significant difference over time.

Materials & design options

Wood species, finishes and profiles.

Western red cedar

Naturally resistant to decay and insects, with a warm color and pleasant grain. A popular choice for stained finishes.

Redwood

A West Coast classic with rich color and good natural durability; availability and grades vary.

Pressure-treated lumber

Cost-effective and durable when properly detailed, usually painted or solid-stained for a finished look.

Stain or paint

Transparent and semi-transparent stains show the grain; paint or solid stains offer a crisp, architectural finish.

Rafter and beam profiles

Shaped tails, square ends, doubled beams or slim modern slats completely change the character.

Planning & installation

Keeping a wood pergola looking its best.

Maintenance. Expect to clean and re-seal or re-stain periodically, depending on sun exposure and finish. South- and west-facing structures weather faster. Painted finishes need touch-ups where they crack or peel.

Detailing for durability. Post bases that keep wood off concrete, sloped cuts that shed water and sealed end grain all help the structure last longer.

Fire considerations. In foothill areas designated as high fire hazard severity zones, such as La Cañada Flintridge and parts of La Crescenta, Glendale and Pasadena, material and construction requirements for structures near the house can be stricter. We’ll discuss whether aluminum or other materials make more sense for your location.

Cost factors. Species and grade, size, finish, footing requirements and site access are the main drivers.

Permits. Whether a permit is required depends on your city and the specifics of the structure — its size and height, whether it attaches to the house, its distance from property lines, its roof type and any electrical work. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena each have their own building departments, while addresses in neighborhoods like Studio City, Sherman Oaks or North Hollywood fall under the City of Los Angeles (LADBS). We’ll help you understand what typically applies before you commit, and the local building department always has the final word.

Common questions.

Lifespan depends on species, detailing, finish and maintenance. Well-built, regularly maintained wood structures can serve for many years; neglected ones deteriorate faster in strong sun.

Both are naturally decay-resistant and beautiful. The choice often comes down to look, availability and budget. We’ll show you options when we prepare your estimate.

It varies with exposure and product. Many homeowners refresh the finish every few years; west-facing or fully exposed structures may need it more often.

Yes. Vines like wisteria, jasmine or grapes can be beautiful, but heavy vines add weight and moisture. We’ll plan the structure accordingly if you intend to grow plants on it.
