Pathway lighting

Pathway Lighting for Safe, Beautiful Walkways

Pathway lighting guides guests from the driveway to the door and from the patio to the far corners of the garden, safely and with a quiet elegance that makes the whole property feel welcoming.

Overview

Guide the way, gently.

Effective path lighting creates soft pools of light along a walkway rather than a runway of bright dots. Fixture spacing, height and beam spread determine whether a path looks natural or overlit. Step lights recessed into risers or walls handle level changes, and bollards can define driveways and larger paths.

Path lighting is a core part of a broader landscape lighting plan and pairs naturally with new paver patios and walkways, where wiring can be run before hardscape is laid.

Planning & installation

Getting path lighting right.

Spacing. Staggered, well-spaced fixtures look more natural than evenly lined rows.

Durability. Quality fixtures in brass, copper or well-finished aluminum hold up better than plastic.

Coordinate with hardscape. Installing conduit before new paving saves cutting later.

Electrical work. Low-voltage lighting runs from a transformer plugged into or wired to an outdoor-rated power source. New circuits, outlets, line-voltage fixtures and connections to your electrical panel must be performed by a licensed electrician and may require an electrical permit. We’ll explain what your design needs and how that work will be handled.

Cost factors. Path length, number and type of fixtures, wiring routes, hardscape conditions and controls.

It depends on fixture output and the look you want. Staggered spacing that creates overlapping pools of light usually looks best.

Yes. Low-voltage wiring can usually be run along planting beds beside existing paths.

Solid brass and copper fixtures are very durable outdoors; quality aluminum is a good alternative.

Most are. Transformers and any new circuits must be installed properly, with licensed electricians for line-voltage work.
