Retractable shade systems

Retractable Shade Systems for Flexible, On-Demand Shade

Sometimes you want sun, sometimes you don’t. Retractable awnings, canopies and drop screens give you shade exactly when you need it and disappear when you don’t.

Overview

Shade that adapts to the day.

Retractable shade is ideal where a permanent roof would feel heavy, block a view or darken interior rooms. Motorized awnings extend from the wall at the touch of a button; retractable canopies slide along pergola rafters; vertical drop screens lower to block low afternoon sun, wind or insects at the sides of a patio or pergola.

These systems pair especially well with existing structures. A pergola with a retractable canopy, or a patio cover with motorized side screens, can solve comfort problems without starting over. See also pergola upgrades and louvered pergolas.

Planning & installation

What to plan for.

Wind. Fabric systems should be retracted in strong winds. Wind sensors can automate that on motorized awnings.

Mounting. Awnings need solid structural mounting on the house; screens need suitable posts or beams.

Power. Motorized systems need electrical connections installed by a licensed electrician.

Fabric. Openness factor, color and material affect shade, visibility and heat.

Cost factors. Size, system type, motorization, sensors, fabric and mounting conditions.
