Guide

Pergola, gazebo or pavilion?

Choosing the right structure comes down to how much shade you need, whether you want rain protection, where in the yard it will go and how it should relate to your house. In much of the San Fernando Valley and the foothills, strong afternoon sun makes placement and orientation just as important as the structure itself.

We’ll talk through materials (wood, aluminum or louvered systems), attached or freestanding designs, and upgrades like lighting, fans and privacy screens.

Pergola

An open or slatted roof on posts that filters sunlight. Great for defining a space and adding partial shade. Louvered pergolas add adjustable cover.

Gazebo

A freestanding structure with a solid roof, often square or octagonal. Full shade and light-rain protection for a defined retreat.

Pavilion

A larger, open-sided roofed structure built to shelter outdoor kitchens, dining and lounge areas.

FAQ

Questions we hear often.

It depends on the city and the structure’s size, height, attachment and roof type. We’ll help you understand typical requirements; your building department decides.

Yes, though planning wiring paths and mounting points during construction gives a cleaner result. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.

Powder-coated aluminum needs the least maintenance. Well-built, regularly maintained wood structures also last for many years.
