What's the difference between a pergola and a patio cover?

A traditional pergola has an open or partially open roof of beams and rafters that filters sunlight. A patio cover has a solid or closed roof that blocks sun and rain. Louvered pergolas sit in between: their adjustable blades can open for light or close for full cover. We can help you decide which suits your space.

Do I need a permit for a pergola or patio cover?

It depends on where you live and what you’re building. Size, height, whether the structure attaches to the house, setbacks, roof type and any electrical work can all affect requirements, and each city sets its own rules. We’ll help you understand what typically applies to your project, and your local building department has the final say.

How much does a pergola or patio cover cost?

Cost depends on size, materials, the roof system, foundation and footing requirements, site access and features like lighting, fans or privacy screens. Rather than quote a generic number, we provide a project-specific written estimate once we understand what you want to build.

Can you add lighting, fans or heaters to a pergola?

Yes. Lighting, ceiling fans, heaters, shade screens and privacy panels are popular upgrades. Any work that requires new electrical circuits or gas connections must be performed by appropriately licensed professionals and may require permits, and we’ll be upfront about what your project needs.
