Outdoor privacy screens

Outdoor Privacy Screens for a More Private Backyard

Close neighbors, two-story homes next door and hillside views into your yard are part of life in Los Angeles. A well-designed privacy screen gives you a sense of enclosure without making your backyard feel boxed in.

Overview

Privacy that looks intentional.

A privacy screen can be a freestanding slatted wall beside a spa, panels attached to a pergola, a decorative screen that hides equipment or trash bins, or a series of screens that frame a seating area. Done well, it becomes a design feature with texture, shadow and rhythm, not just a barrier.

We design screens in wood, aluminum and composite slats, sized and spaced to block sightlines where they matter while letting air and light through. Screens can integrate with pergolas and patio covers, or stand on their own.

Planning & installation

Height, rules and structure.

Height limits. Cities regulate fence and wall heights, especially near property lines and in front yards. Taller screens may require permits or need to be set back. We’ll help you understand typical limits.

Wind load. Solid or tightly spaced screens catch wind and need adequate posts and footings.

Neighbors and HOAs. Shared fences and HOA rules may affect what you can build.

Cost factors. Length, height, material, slat spacing, footings and finishing.

Permits. Whether a permit is required depends on your city and the specifics of the structure — its size and height, whether it attaches to the house, its distance from property lines, its roof type and any electrical work. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena each have their own building departments, while addresses in neighborhoods like Studio City, Sherman Oaks or North Hollywood fall under the City of Los Angeles (LADBS). We’ll help you understand what typically applies before you commit, and the local building department always has the final word.

Often, yes, provided the structure can handle the added wind load. We’ll evaluate it.
