Pergola Upgrades: Screens, Lighting, Fans & Heaters

Make your pergola more comfortable, more private and more usable through the seasons. Upgrades can be planned into a new pergola or added to an existing one.

Upgrades

Ways to upgrade your pergola.

Each upgrade solves a specific comfort problem. Most pergolas benefit from a combination.

01

Pergola shade screens

Fabric or slatted screens that block low-angle afternoon sun from one or more sides of a pergola.

02

Pergola curtains

Outdoor-fabric curtains on rods or tracks for softness, privacy and adjustable shade.

03

Retractable canopies

Fabric panels that slide along the rafters, opening or closing the roof as needed.

04

Outdoor privacy panels

Fixed slatted or decorative panels that screen views and add architectural texture.

05

Pergola lighting upgrades

String lights, integrated LEDs, pendants and dimmable scenes, planned with licensed electrical work.

06

Outdoor ceiling fans

Damp- or wet-rated fans for air movement on still, hot afternoons.

07

Outdoor heaters

Radiant electric or gas heaters for cool evenings, installed to manufacturer clearances.

Planning

Adding upgrades to an existing pergola.

Check the structure. Screens, panels and heavier fixtures add weight and wind load. We’ll assess whether your pergola can support the upgrade or needs reinforcement.

Plan the power. Lighting, fans, motorized screens and electric heaters need power. New circuits and hardwired connections must be installed by a licensed electrician and may require permits.

Respect clearances. Heaters must be installed with the manufacturer’s required clearances from fabrics, structure and roof elements.

Choose outdoor-rated products. Fans, fixtures and fabrics should be rated for damp or wet locations and UV exposure.
