Louvered & motorized pergolas

Louvered Pergolas with Adjustable, Motorized Roofs

A louvered pergola lets you decide how much sun you want, minute by minute. Rotate the blades open for morning light, angle them against the afternoon sun, or close them completely when it rains.

Overview

Sun when you want it. Shade when you need it.

Louvered pergolas use a roof of aluminum blades that rotate on a pivot, usually driven by a quiet motor and a remote, wall switch or app. Open, they let in light and allow heat to escape. Closed, they interlock to create solid shade and channel rainwater into gutters built into the frame.

That flexibility makes them one of the most practical ways to use a patio year-round in Los Angeles: bright winter mornings, scorching July afternoons and the occasional rainy evening dinner all work under the same roof.

Louvered systems are a premium product, and they’re not right for every yard or budget. A fixed aluminum pergola or a solid patio cover may meet your needs at a lower cost. We’ll help you compare honestly.

Planning & installation

What to consider before choosing louvers.

Electrical. Motorized roofs, lighting and sensors need power. New circuits and connections must be installed by a licensed electrician and may require an electrical permit.

Code classification. Because a closed louvered roof acts like a solid cover, building departments often review louvered pergolas the same way they review patio covers. That can affect permit requirements and setbacks.

Maintenance. Blades, seals and gutters need occasional cleaning, especially under trees that drop leaves and pods. Motors and sensors are mechanical and electronic components with their own warranties from the manufacturer.

Cost factors. Size, system brand, motorization, sensors, lighting, screens, footings and electrical work all affect cost.

Permits. Whether a permit is required depends on your city and the specifics of the structure — its size and height, whether it attaches to the house, its distance from property lines, its roof type and any electrical work. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena each have their own building departments, while addresses in neighborhoods like Studio City, Sherman Oaks or North Hollywood fall under the City of Los Angeles (LADBS). We’ll help you understand what typically applies before you commit, and the local building department always has the final word.

When closed, most quality systems shed rain into integrated gutters and keep the space beneath dry in typical rain. Very heavy, wind-driven rain can still blow in from the sides; side screens help.

Motorized systems, lighting and sensors do. Manual systems don’t require power for the louvers themselves. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.

Open the blades and rinse or wipe them periodically, and keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris, especially under trees.

If you want one space that works in full sun, shade and light rain, many homeowners find it worthwhile. If you mostly need fixed shade, a slatted pergola or patio cover can be more cost-effective.

Often louvered pergolas are reviewed like patio covers, and electrical work typically requires permits. Requirements vary by city.
