Common Pergola Installation Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Undersized footings, poor attachment to the house, ignoring sun angles and skipping permits are among the most common pergola mistakes. Here's how to avoid them.

A pergola is a long-term addition to your home. These are the mistakes we see most often, and how to avoid them.

1. Inadequate footings

Bolting posts to a thin or cracked slab, or using undersized footings, can lead to movement, leaning and safety issues. Footings should suit the structure, soil and loads.

2. Poor connection to the house

Attached pergolas need a solid ledger connection to framing and proper flashing. Fastening only into stucco or trim, or skipping flashing, invites failure and water damage.

3. Ignoring the sun

A pergola that doesn’t shade where you actually sit at the times you use it is disappointing. Study sun angles, especially late-afternoon western sun.

4. Wrong scale

Too small and the furniture doesn’t fit; too large and it overwhelms the yard or house. Size around your intended use and proportion it to the architecture.

5. Skipping the permit check

Requirements vary by city and design. Unpermitted structures can cause problems with insurance or when selling. Check first; see pergola permits in Los Angeles.

6. Forgetting electrical

Adding lights or fans after the fact often means visible conduit. Plan power and mounting points during construction, with a licensed electrician.

7. Choosing materials without considering maintenance

Wood needs periodic care; aluminum needs little. Pick the material that matches the upkeep you’re willing to do.

8. Neglecting drainage

Solid or louvered roofs collect water; make sure it drains away from the house and patio.

9. Overlooking wind

Screens, panels and solid roofs catch wind. Structures need appropriate anchoring.

How a well-planned installation works

A good pergola project follows a clear sequence: understanding how you’ll use the space, studying sun and site conditions, choosing materials and size, confirming permit requirements, planning footings and any electrical, then building with care and finishing properly. Skipping early steps is where most of the mistakes above come from.

Questions to ask any installer

  1. How will the posts be anchored, and why?
  2. How will the pergola attach to the house, and how will that connection be flashed?
  3. What finish will be applied, and when?
  4. Is lighting or fan wiring planned, and who will perform electrical work?
  5. Does my project need a permit, and how will that be handled?
  6. What’s included in the estimate, and what isn’t?

Red flags

  • No discussion of footings or the existing slab.
  • Vague estimates without dimensions, materials or finishes.
  • Dismissing permit questions without checking.
  • Pressure to decide on the spot.
