How to Add Lighting to a Pergola

String lights, integrated LEDs, pendants and downlights can transform a pergola after dark. Here's how to plan pergola lighting, from power and fixtures to controls and safety.

Lighting is what turns a pergola from a daytime shade structure into an evening destination. Here’s how to plan it so it looks great and works safely.

1. Decide what the light is for

  • Ambiance: soft, warm light for relaxing and entertaining.
  • Task: enough light to cook, serve and eat comfortably.
  • Accent: highlighting the structure itself, plants or nearby features.

Most pergolas benefit from a combination, ideally on separate, dimmable controls.

2. Choose your fixtures

Festoon string lights

Relaxed and festive. Use commercial-grade, outdoor-rated strings with proper support cables to prevent sagging.

Integrated LED strips

Hidden in channels or beams for a clean, modern glow. Many aluminum systems offer this built-in.

Pendants and lanterns

A focal fixture over a dining table. Choose damp- or wet-rated fixtures depending on exposure.

Downlights

Small fixtures on beams provide useful, glare-free light.

Post uplights

Ground fixtures that graze posts make the structure itself a feature at night.

3. Plan the power

Identify where power will come from. Plug-in string lights may work from an existing outdoor GFCI outlet; hardwired fixtures, new outlets, fans and new circuits must be installed by a licensed electrician and often require a permit. Running conduit during pergola construction keeps wiring concealed.

4. Pick warm color temperatures

Warm white (around 2700K–3000K) flatters wood, stone and skin tones and feels more relaxing than cool white.

5. Add dimmers and controls

Dimmers let you move from dinner to late-evening mood. Smart switches and timers add convenience.

6. Mind glare and neighbors

Shield bright sources and avoid aiming lights toward neighbors’ windows.

7. Consider fans and heaters together

If you plan a fan or heater, plan its power and mounting at the same time as lighting.

Mounting ideas by pergola type

Wood pergolas are easy to fit with hooks for string lights, surface-mounted downlights and pendants; wiring can be routed along beams or in shallow channels. Aluminum pergolas often offer purpose-built LED channels and accessory mounts. Louvered systems typically come with manufacturer-specific lighting kits integrated into the frame or blades.

Safety checklist

  • Use fixtures rated for damp or wet locations as appropriate.
  • Protect outdoor outlets with GFCI protection.
  • Keep connections out of standing water and irrigation spray.
  • Support string lights with a tensioned cable.
  • Keep heaters and lights at manufacturer-specified clearances from fabrics.

Frequently asked questions

Are solar lights a good option?

Solar fixtures are easy to install but usually dimmer and less reliable than hardwired or low-voltage lighting, especially under a shaded pergola.

Can I add a ceiling fan to my pergola?

Often, yes, with an outdoor-rated fan, a solid mounting point and a power supply installed by a licensed electrician. Open roofs may need a solid section or beam mount.
