Shade is the single most valuable upgrade for many Los Angeles backyards. Without it, a patio can be unusable for hours on summer afternoons. But “shade” can mean very different things. Here’s how the main options compare.
First, understand your sun
Watch your yard through a summer day. Note where the sun is when you’d most like to be outside, especially in the late afternoon, when low western sun slips under many roofs. That one observation often decides the right solution.
Pergolas: filtered shade and structure
Open-rafter pergolas cast dappled, moving shade. Tighter rafter spacing, slats or shade cloth increase coverage. They’re ideal where you want some sun and an architectural frame. Learn about custom pergolas.
Patio covers: maximum, reliable shade
Solid or insulated patio covers block the sun completely and keep rain off. Insulated panels reduce radiant heat and can hold recessed lights. Best for dining areas and outdoor kitchens. See patio covers.
Louvered pergolas: adjustable shade
Rotating blades let you switch between sun, filtered light and full cover, and close for rain. They’re the most flexible option, at a premium price. See louvered pergolas.
Retractable shade: on-demand coverage
Retractable awnings and pergola canopies extend when you need them and disappear when you don’t, preserving views and winter sun. See retractable shade.
Side screens: for low afternoon sun
Overhead roofs can’t stop low-angle sun. Vertical drop screens or fixed slatted panels on the west side are often the missing piece in an otherwise shaded patio.
Gazebos: a shaded destination
A freestanding gazebo creates a fully shaded retreat elsewhere in the yard, by the pool or on the lawn. See gazebos.
Trees: long-term, natural shade
Shade trees are wonderful but take years to mature, drop leaves and need water. They often work best alongside built structures.
