Wood vs. Aluminum Pergolas: Which Is Right for You?

Wood brings warmth and craftsmanship; aluminum brings clean lines and low maintenance. Compare looks, upkeep, durability, fire considerations and cost factors before you decide.

Material is one of the first decisions you’ll make when planning a pergola, and it shapes everything from the look of your backyard to how much time you’ll spend on maintenance. Here’s an honest comparison of the two most popular choices in Southern California.

Appearance

Wood offers natural grain, warmth and texture. It’s endlessly customizable: shaped rafter tails, chunky beams, slim slats, stained or painted finishes. That makes wood a natural fit for Craftsman, Spanish Revival, Tudor and traditional homes common across Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank and Toluca Lake.

Aluminum delivers crisp, precise lines and slim profiles. Powder-coated finishes come in colors like matte black, charcoal, bronze and white, plus wood-look textures. Aluminum suits contemporary and mid-century homes especially well.

Maintenance

This is where the two differ most. Wood outdoors needs to be cleaned and re-sealed, re-stained or repainted periodically to protect it from sun and moisture. How often depends on exposure: west- and south-facing structures in full sun weather faster.

Aluminum needs very little: occasional washing to remove dust and debris. A quality powder coat resists fading and peeling far better than paint on wood.

Durability

Well-built and well-maintained wood pergolas can last many years, especially in decay-resistant species like cedar or redwood, with good detailing that keeps end grain sealed and posts off wet concrete. Neglected wood can crack, check and decay.

Aluminum doesn’t rot, warp or attract termites, and it holds its shape in heat. Quality varies widely between products, though. Wall thickness, connections and finish quality all matter.

Heat

Dark aluminum can get warm to the touch in direct sun, but what matters for comfort is the shade beneath. Slatted and louvered roofs let hot air escape. Wood stays cooler to the touch but offers similar shade for the same roof design.

Fire considerations

In foothill areas designated as very high fire hazard severity zones, including all of La Cañada Flintridge and parts of La Crescenta, Glendale, Pasadena and the hillside neighborhoods of Los Angeles, building requirements for structures near the house can be stricter. Aluminum is non-combustible, which many homeowners in these areas prefer. Check current requirements with your building department.

Flexibility for upgrades

Wood is easy to modify on site: adding hooks, lights, screens or climbing plants is simple. Many aluminum systems offer purpose-built accessories like integrated LED lighting, motorized louvers and side screens.

Cost factors

Costs depend on size, design, the specific species or system, finishes, footings and site conditions. Simple wood pergolas can be economical; premium species and elaborate detailing add cost. Aluminum ranges from basic kits to engineered custom systems and motorized louvered roofs. Over the long term, factor in maintenance time and materials for wood.

Quick comparison

  • Choose wood for warmth, traditional architecture, custom detailing and easy on-site modification, if you don’t mind periodic maintenance.
  • Choose aluminum for low maintenance, modern style, consistent finishes and non-combustible construction.
