Paver Patios and Walkways

A paver patio is the foundation of a great backyard, literally. Pavers create durable, attractive surfaces for dining, lounging and cooking, and they can be repaired more easily than a cracked slab.

Overview

A beautiful, durable foundation.

Pavers are set on a compacted base with joints that allow slight movement, which helps them handle ground movement better than many poured slabs. Individual pavers can be lifted and reset if needed, which is useful for future repairs or for running conduit.

Paver patios work beautifully under pergolas and around fire pits and outdoor kitchens. Planning them alongside structures ensures footings, drainage and finish heights all work together.

Planning & installation

What makes a paver patio last.

Base preparation. The base is everything: proper excavation, compaction and bedding prevent settling.

Drainage. Patios need slope away from the house and a plan for where water goes.

Edge restraint. Edges must be restrained so pavers don’t spread.

Planning for structures. If a pergola or kitchen is planned, footings and utility sleeves should be placed before paving.

Cost factors. Area, paver material, pattern complexity, excavation and haul-away, base depth, drainage and access.

Settling is usually the result of inadequate base preparation. Proper excavation and compaction are key.

Sometimes, depending on the slab’s condition, height and drainage. Often removal and a proper base is the better long-term solution.
