Pergola lighting

Pergola Lighting Ideas, Designed and Installed

A pergola is the perfect frame for lighting. Whether it’s festoon string lights, sleek integrated LEDs or a pendant over the dining table, the right lighting turns your pergola into the best seat in the house after dark.

Overview

Your pergola, after sunset.

Pergola lighting works best when it’s planned with the structure. Concealed wiring paths, mounting points for pendants or fans, and dimmable circuits make the difference between an elegant installation and a tangle of extension cords.

We can add lighting to an existing pergola or plan it into a new custom pergola, aluminum pergola or louvered system. For a broader view, see pergola upgrades.

Planning & installation

What to plan for.

Power source. Identify where power will come from and whether a new circuit or outlet is needed.

Fixture ratings. Use fixtures rated for outdoor and wet or damp locations as appropriate.

Structure. Pendants and fans need secure mounting; louvered systems have their own lighting options.

Electrical work. Low-voltage lighting runs from a transformer plugged into or wired to an outdoor-rated power source. New circuits, outlets, line-voltage fixtures and connections to your electrical panel must be performed by a licensed electrician and may require an electrical permit. We’ll explain what your design needs and how that work will be handled.

Cost factors. Fixture type and quantity, wiring complexity, controls, and electrical work.
