Patio Cover Installation for Los Angeles Homes

A patio cover is one of the most effective ways to make a backyard usable through a long, hot Los Angeles summer. We install attached and freestanding patio covers that provide reliable shade and shelter and look like they belong with your home.

Overview

Real shade, real shelter, real use.

Where a pergola filters light, a patio cover blocks it. A solid or insulated roof can make a sun-baked slab comfortable at 3 p.m. in August, keep furniture and cushions out of the weather, and create an outdoor room you’ll use daily rather than occasionally.

Most patio covers attach to the house along a ledger and extend over a patio or deck, but freestanding covers are a good option where eaves are low, rooflines are complicated or you want the cover elsewhere in the yard. We install covers in aluminum and wood, with solid, insulated, lattice or mixed roof designs.

Materials & design options

Patio cover styles.

Solid roof covers

Full shade and rain protection, ideal over dining and lounge areas.

Insulated roof panels

Foam-core panels reduce heat radiating down from the roof and often allow recessed lights.

Lattice and open covers

Filtered shade and airflow where you still want some sun.

Combination designs

A solid section over the seating area with lattice beyond for a gradual transition.

Attached covers

Extend directly from the house to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection.

Freestanding covers

Placed anywhere in the yard, independent of the house roofline.

Benefits

What a patio cover adds.

01

Cooler outdoor space

Solid shade makes a dramatic difference in how usable a patio is in summer.

02

Weather protection

Keeps rain off furniture, grills and guests.

03

Interior comfort

Shading windows and doors can reduce sun hitting the house on that side.

04

Extended living area

An outdoor room that functions as an extension of your kitchen or family room.

Planning & installation

Key planning considerations.

Attachment and roofline. An attached cover must connect to the house at a height that allows proper roof slope and head clearance, and must be flashed to keep water out of the wall. Low eaves sometimes push the design toward a freestanding cover or a roof-mounted connection.

Drainage. Solid covers shed a lot of water; gutters and downspouts should direct it away from the house and patio.

Lighting and fans. Planning electrical before installation keeps wiring concealed. New circuits must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Cost factors. Size, roof type (solid, insulated or lattice), material, attachment method, footings, electrical and site access.

Permits. Patio covers commonly require permits. Whether a permit is required depends on your city and the specifics of the structure — its size and height, whether it attaches to the house, its distance from property lines, its roof type and any electrical work. Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena each have their own building departments, while addresses in neighborhoods like Studio City, Sherman Oaks or North Hollywood fall under the City of Los Angeles (LADBS). We’ll help you understand what typically applies before you commit, and the local building department always has the final word.

FAQ

Common questions.

Still have questions? Call (747) 344-7727.

Patio covers commonly require permits, especially attached covers and larger structures. Specific requirements depend on your city and the design, and your building department makes the final determination.

If you want full shade and rain protection, choose a patio cover. If you want filtered light and a more open feel, a pergola may suit you better. Louvered systems offer both.

Yes. Insulated panels often accommodate recessed lighting, and covers can be designed with fan mounting points. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician.

It can reduce light to adjacent rooms. Partial lattice sections, skylight panels or careful sizing can balance shade outside with daylight inside.
